Yunomi Handroll (DTLA)

Yunomi Handroll, here I come! I was craving hand rolls, so I decided to try Yunomi Handroll for the first time! Usually I would go to KazuNori for hand rolls, but today is a day to try something new.

The restaurant was not too big, with bar seating. We were seated at the corner of the area. It felt a little tight, but the one thing that stood out to me most was that the seats were not very comfortable. To view the menu, there is a QR code on the table for you to scan. In addition to the hand rolls that you can order individually or as a set, there are also starters and appetizers. The starters and appetizers all looked good. The sets had the more typical types of fish – tuna, albacore, salmon, yellowtail, scallop, and shrimp tempura. If you wanted the specialty hand rolls like crab or negitoro, you would have to order those individually.

I decided to get the Five Handroll Set, which comes with a tuna, albacore, salmon, scallop, and shrimp tempura handroll. I really wanted to try the yellowtail handroll which comes in the Six Handroll Set, but I also wanted to get a specialty roll and seven hand rolls would have been too much food. I ordered the Yunomi Special Handroll on top of the set in addition to two appetizers to share – the Rock Shrimp Tempura and the Spicy Albacore on Crispy Rice.

Appetizers

Rock Shrimp Tempura – Rock Shrimp Tempura tossed in house Spicy Mayo seasoned with Shichimi Togarashi and finished with Chives. The Rock Shrimp Tempura came out first. There were a good number of pieces of shrimp and I loved the sauce and texture of the shrimp tempura. I definitely recommend trying this!

Spicy Albacore on Crispy Rice – Spicy Albacore on crispy rice drizzled with truffle soy sauce and topped with crunchy onion. We added the Spicy Albacore on Crispy Rice later on in our meal, so it came out when we were eating our rolls. I typically do not prefer eating crispy rice, but I did like this one! The order came with four pieces (pretty pricey for four pieces, actually), so my friend and I each had two. One piece would have been enough for me, since it was pretty filling and I already ordered so many rolls to eat. Although I did like the flavor of this appetizer (the truffle soy sauce was delicious!), trying this once is good enough for me.

Hand Rolls

Five Handroll Set – Tuna, Albacore, Salmon, Scallop, Shrimp Tempura.

For my hand roll set, I got them non-spicy served with Japanese nori. The fish was actually sliced and not chopped, which is different from what I am used to at KazuNori. However, my friend had ordered his hand rolls spicy and his fish were all chopped. The rolls came out one by one. The staff did not always say which hand roll they were serving. Even though we were able to tell which hand roll it is, it was confusing because me and my friend’s hand rolls were served in a different order, even though we had ordered the same set.

The fish tasted fresh, and I liked the Japanese nori. Since the fish was cut in slices, it was a little hard to bite off the hand roll, but it was still delicious! The tuna and salmon hand rolls were a bit plain to me, but I really liked the albacore and scallop hand rolls. The shrimp tempura hand roll was different and new, which I enjoyed.

The most interesting hand roll was definitely the Yunomi Special. I really liked the addition of the truffle soy in the hand roll! With the shrimp tempura and crunchy onions, there was definitely a crunch when you bite into it! There is also spicy albacore in this hand roll, which sets it apart from their normal shrimp tempura hand roll. Although it is on the pricier side, this was my favorite roll this meal!

Overall, this was a very tasty meal. I loved the Rock Shrimp Tempura and the Yunomi Special Hand Roll. However, if I wanted to get only hand rolls and no appetizers, I would choose KazuNori over Yunomi Handroll because of the hand rolls that come with the set.
