When you say barbecue, most people would think of a hot summer day with a grill on the patio cooking up some hot dogs, patties, and chicken wings. What I like to think of is Chinese barbecue, the type that’s already all cooked for you.
If you’ve ever walked into a Chinese restaurant and seen roast pork or duck hanging behind the glass and some chicken, sausage, and pork hanging out on the side (probably sitting in so much sauce that you can barely see it), that is what I think of. It’s perfect to eat with rice, and even if you don’t have the meat, some of that sauce poured over your rice is great.
To order, you call out to the 師傅 (see fu), or “master,” who stands behind the glass, waiting to chop up some meat for you. Some people say that if you’re nice and smile at the 師傅, they will give you a better piece of meat! The final price will either be by quantity or weight, depending on what you order. You can order barbecue pork by both quantity and weight (one piece or 1 lb), but at the end of the day, you will be charged by the weight. With roast duck, you can only order by quantity (one or half roast duck).
There are many places where you can get Chinese barbecue, but here are some places to check out!
凱悅大酒樓 Happy Harbor Cuisine
The BBQ pork (叉燒 cha siu) here is very yummy – not too dry, and not too fat! If you dine in after 3pm, there is also a special where you can order a combination set for a good price – your choice of two BBQ items with a bowl of rice and a drink, all under $10. I typically get the BBQ pork with either roast duck or sausage! The food here is a bit pricier, but not so expensive that I would go to a cheaper place for BBQ pork.
豪記麵館 Ho Kee Cafe
Definitely try the roast duck (燒鴨 siu aap) here! Every bite of the roast duck is filled with a good piece of meat. Dip it in the sweet orange sauce for a great flavor! There may be a short wait to get seated, but the roast duck tastes a lot better when it’s eaten fresh at the restaurant.
利苑海鮮酒家 Monterey Palace Restaurant
If you’re feeling fancy or throwing a celebration dinner for a table, try the suckling pig (乳豬 jyu zyu)! It has crispy skin and tasty meat, and is beautiful for photos. Make sure to call ahead of time to place your order!
三和燒臘麵家 Sam Woo B.B.Q.
Looking for something more simple? Head to Sam Woo to get a bit of everything! You can get roast duck, roast pork (燒肉 siu yuk), and barbecue pork here. I would also get some sausage (香腸 hoeng coeng), cuttle fish (墨魚 mak jyu), pork intestine (豬大腸 zyu dai coeng), pork stomach (豬肚 zyu tou), pig tongue (豬脷 zyu lei), and duck kidney (鴨腎 aap sun) while you’re here too.
Rather than eating in the restaurant, I like to take this home to eat. Start your rice cooker before coming to grab your food so that you can eat right when you get home!
Hope your stomach is ready for some yummy food!
