Mikomi Sushi (Alhambra)

Time to try a new sushi spot! Mikomi Sushi in Alhambra is offering a nice Happy Hour deal under new management, with everything 30% off, everyday until 5pm. This includes weekends, but is for dine-in only. This makes it a great place to check out for lunch on the weekends! The menu has so many options under each category – appetizers, tempura, salad, hot stone pots, bento boxes, ramen and udon, and, of course, sushi, sashimi, and rolls! There’s something for everyone here, and if you don’t know what something is, don’t worry, because there’s a picture for every item. I was excited to check it out.

After placing our order, the food comes out on a robot! Of course, the staff is still around to take it off the tray and place it on your table, but it was pretty neat to see our food rolling out on a robot.

Tempura

Creamy Rock Shrimp Tempura – crispy rock shrimp tossed in spicy mayo, sweet chili, and sesame oil – The Creamy Rock Shrimp Tempura comes with 6 pieces. I really liked the flavor and crispiness! However, I might not get it at its original price.

Kitchen Hot Stone Pots

Hot stone pots are always so interesting to me. It makes the food feel so much more special. There were five different hot stone pots to choose from on the menu (Chicken Donburi, Beef Donburi, Miso Glazed Black Cod, Salmon Hijiki, Unagi Blue Crab), but we decided on the Unagi Blue Crab Hot Stone Pot, since we don’t get unagi that often. You can also add a sous vide egg for $2.99.

Unagi Blue Crab Hot Stone Pot – unagi, blue crab, red pickled ginger, micro cilantro, masago, green onion, sesame seeds, furikake, sesame oil in sizzling hot stone pot – Overall, the hot stone pot was good, but the pieces of unagi were a bit thin. There was a decent amount of toppings on top of the rice, but towards the end, it felt like there wasn’t enough food to go with the rice so the proportions seemed a bit off. Would I get it again? I would probably try the Miso Glazed Black Cod or the Salmon Hijiki next time and see how I like those first.

Rolls

There are fresh rolls, tempura rolls, baked rolls, classic cut rolls, and hand rolls. If you love rolls and have at least 3-4 people in your party, I’d recommend getting the Pass Around Family Style Rolls, where you can choose any four rolls from the fresh, tempura, and baked rolls, and it will be prepared family style for $64.99! It’s also cheaper than ordering each roll individually. These were the four rolls we ordered:

BSCR Roll – in: crabmeat, avocado | out: baked scallop, green onion, masago, eel sauce – I usually like BSCR Rolls, but this one just didn’t quite hit the spot. The rice was unfortunately falling apart since it was so saucy, making it hard to grab each piece.

Giant Roll – in: california roll | out: salmon, spicy tuna, scallop, green onion, masago, eel sauce, spicy mayo, soy mustard – This roll was good, and I liked how there was also scallop on each piece! Make sure you open your mouth big enough to eat it in one bite!

Yuzu Yellowtail Roll – in: soy paper, shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, cucumber, cilantro | out: yellowtail, jalapeño, red onion, yuzu ponzu -The Yuzu Yellowtail Roll is another great option for rolls! This roll tasted very fresh and simple (in a good way) since it wasn’t covered in too much sauce. I’d definitely get this roll again!

Mikomi Special Roll – in: shrimp tempura, blue crab, avocado, gobo | out: soy paper, assorted sashimi, spicy tuna, green onion, masago, eel sauce, soy mustard – The outside of the Mikomi Special Roll is pretty similar to the Giant Roll with the spicy tuna, green onion, masago, eel sauce, and soy mustard. I do like how this one has shrimp tempura and blue crab on the inside though! I would choose this roll over the Giant Roll next time since it’s more unique.

Sushi Bar Signature Donburi

Chirashi Don – This chirashi don comes with seaweed on the side. Grab the spoon and scoop whatever fish and ingredients you want on the seaweed for the perfect bite, every bite! There is rice on the bottom.

Chirashi Don $32.99

Kaisen Don – chef’s choice assorted premium sashimi, uni, blue crab, sweet shrimp, ikura, furikake, sesame oil, sushi rice, side of nori – The Kaisen Don is a bit more expensive, but I would consider getting it during Happy Hour. It comes in a larger bowl, with slices of sashimi, uni, blue crab, and sweet shrimp! The server pours the ikura on top after placing the bowl in front of you. The fish tasted fresh, and it was a pretty big portion – I almost couldn’t finish it!

This is a good spot for lunch if you are craving some sushi! I’ll definitely be back again to try some other items on the menu during their Happy Hour.
