Kobawoo House (Koreatown)

What do I want to eat today? Bossam! This is a Korean dish where you would typically wrap boiled pork with cabbage wraps along with other sides. I’ve only had it a few times (and that was a long time ago), so I wanted to give it another try!

I decided to go to Kobawoo House, located in a small plaza with valet parking for $3. I arrived in time for dinner at around 6:15pm, and there was no wait. It wasn’t too packed either, with a few empty tables. The menu was split into four main categories – Special Dishes, Appetizers, Traditional Specialties, and a Weekday Lunch Menu! For two people, we ordered a medium Bossam and the Haemul Pajeon.

Bossam – boiled pork belly with napa cabbage, pickled daikon, radish kimchi, and salt fermented shrimp
Haemul Pajeon – seafood pancake with a mixture of shrimp, mussels, squid, crab meat, and green onions

The banchan (side dishes) came first. I liked the kimchi and cucumber salad.

The bossam came out soon after. I was so excited. I wasn’t sure how big the medium sized bossam would be – I was scared it wouldn’t be enough food! It turned out to be more than enough. There were many thin slices of boiled pork belly. It’s hard to tell from the photo, but there’s actually more pork belly under the first layer! The layer on the bottom was more lean. I do wish there was more pickled daikon to eat with the pork belly! This medium bossam probably would have been a good amount for three people. I really enjoyed the pork belly with the pickled daikon plus some of the kimchi and fermented shrimp. It was so flavorful and juicy!

Next, the Haemul Pajeon came – it was big and thick! There was a good amount of seafood on the inside, and was delicious with the sauce it came with. Since we had already finished most of the bossam by the time the haemul pajeon came out, we weren’t able to finish the pancake. The staff even gave us extra sauce to take back.

Overall, this was a delicious meal! Next time, I’d want to go with more people so we can try more dishes though. The weekday lunch menu looked good too. Can’t wait for my next bossam adventure!
