Ji Rong Peking Duck (Rosemead)

Mmm…peking duck! Peking duck is for special occasions – banquets, parties, large gatherings, etc. It’s so expensive! I have been looking at Ji Rong Peking Duck for some time, so I was very excited when I learned that I would be getting dinner here! Reservations need to be made in advance if you want to order the peking duck. If it’s the weekend, I would recommend reserving a table for your meal because some people showed up for dinner without a reservation and were turned away. I called the day of, on a Saturday, and we were only able to get a reservation very late at night. Even with a reservation, we had to wait for the table to open up when we arrived. Our reservation was for 7:45pm and we got seated at 8pm. I was so worried they were going to run out of the peking duck even though I had placed the order when I reserved the table!

We were seated at a small table in the corner. For the amount of food we were ordering, I was expecting a slightly larger table. The waiter asked us what tea we would like, and we decided to get Jasmine Tea 茉莉花茶. The tea came in a big clear teapot which was pretty cool! The tea was very hot and fragrant. It was also $2 per person which I was not expecting, but we were able to get a few refills in too. Overall, the tea was pretty good and went well with the meal.

The rest of the menu was surprisingly not as expensive as other restaurants. Aside from the peking duck, we also ordered a few other dishes:

  • House Special Pancake 特制抓餅 – I really liked this pancake! I probably could’ve finished one all by myself. I’d definitely order this again!
  • Lamb Skewers 羊肉串 (3) – The lamb skewers were very spicy.
  • Jellyfish 淨拌蜇皮 – This was good, but not my favorite jellyfish dish.
  • Hot & Spicy Pork Feet 香辣豬手 – The sauce was flavorful and the pork feet was so soft! I liked the level of softness this pork feet dish had.
  • Chicken Fried Rice 雞肉炒飯 – There wasn’t anything too special about this dish, but it was just what we needed – a plate of delicious rice!

All the dishes came out very quickly, and our table was filled with plates of food. We barely had enough space to eat!

The Roasted Peking Duck comes with a whole peking duck, thin pancakes, shredded green onion, shredded cucumber, and sauce. The skin was pretty skinny in terms of the width – I would have preferred slightly wider skin. It was also relatively thick, so the hot tea definitely helped us feel not as unhealthy! I’ve always loved the assembly aspect of this dish. I started with the thin pancake, added the sauce, peking duck and peking duck skin, then finally the shredded green onion and shredded cucumber. I rolled it up and now it’s ready to eat!

The waiter came by at around 8:30pm to ask if we wanted to place any other orders. We were satisfied with the amount we had, so we’ll have to save the other dishes for next time! This was a delicious meal, and I can’t wait for the next time I have peking duck!
