Good Treats Only

With my princess dress or Halloween shirt with detachable butterfly wings, my Halloween began with waiting in line at the mall for my treats or joining my friends as they happily yell trick-or-treat! whenever a neighbor’s door opens. My little basket would be filled with candy by the end of the night, and that’s when it’s decision-making time – I was only allowed to keep 10 pieces of candy. (Maybe that’s why I’m not a huge fan of candy now?) I would pour out my basket and carefully select my 10 treats of the year – the rest would end up with my friends.

As a kid with limited candy experience, which 10 do I keep?

10. Hershey’s
Between Hershey’s bar and Hershey’s Kisses, I’d probably choose the Kisses (unless the bar is not the typical milk chocolate flavor). It’s a good amount of chocolate in one bite!

9. M&M’s
If I’m craving a sweet snack to munch on, M&M’s Milk Chocolate Minis (preferably in a tube) would be my go-to. The regular-sized M&M’s are more common as a treat, and would be my choice if I wanted more pieces of candy counted as one of ten.

8. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
I never appreciated these peanut butter cups until I tried them again when I was older – I definitely missed out a lot as a kid. The peanut cream combined with the chocolate is a satisfying afternoon snack!

7. Kit Kat
If I were trick-or-treating in Japan, it would be really tough to decide which Kit Kat to keep, let alone which 10 pieces of candy to keep. There are so many unique and tasty Kit Kat flavors, making it impossible to choose!

6. Twix
One bite in exchange for three levels of yumminess: chocolatey, caramelly, and crunchy. What more can you ask for?

5. Nestle Crunch
Aside from the crisped rice and milk chocolate, I love the wrapping. The bar is packed so nicely that the wrapping has minimal creases, and the blue really makes the CRUNCH stand out!

4. Skittles
Here’s a nice fruit-flavored candy that’s on my keep list. With its colorful appearance, this candy is hard to resist! Skittles Sour are even more addicting…until your tongue can’t handle it anymore.

3. Starburst
Remove the wrapper and let that Starburst slowly dissolve in your mouth! This individually wrapped soft taffy candy is great for trading with friends. What are your chances of getting two of the same color in the same pack?

2. Tootsie Rolls
Chewy, chocolatey, and not too sweet, Tootsie Rolls are great to suck on. It won’t melt in your mouth as quickly as chocolate, letting you enjoy the taste of chocolate for longer.

1. Haribo Gummy Bears
These fruit-flavored gummy bears are my favorite, but pretty rare for Halloween candy. Each bear is the perfect size for a soft and chewy snack that you can just pop into your mouth. Favorite flavor? The colorless pineapple bear.
